OSRS Grand Tree Quick Guide Fast Quest Walkthrough

The Grand Tree quest in Old School RuneScape (OSRS) is a classic adventure that sends players deep into the heart of the Tree Gnome Stronghold to save a dying tree and uncover a sinister plot. This quest is a prerequisite for Monkey Madness I and unlocks useful rewards like the Gnome Glider system. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a newcomer, this quick guide will walk you through the steps to complete the Grand Tree efficiently. Let’s dive into the essentials to get you through this quest as fast as possible!
Before starting the Grand Tree, ensure you meet the requirements and have the recommended items to make the process smoother.
Skill and Quest Requirements
- 25 Agility: Required to navigate certain parts of the quest, though it can be boosted if needed.
- Ability to defeat a level 172 Black Demon: This boss can be safespotted with Ranged, Magic, or a halberd for melee, so combat preparation is key.
- No quest prerequisites, making it accessible early in your OSRS journey.
Recommended Items
Having the right items will save you time and hassle. Here’s what you should bring:
- Teleportation methods: Spirit Tree (if Tree Gnome Village is completed), Necklace of Passage, Ring of Dueling, or Fairy Ring access (code CLS for Hazelmere).
- 1,000 coins: Needed if you haven’t helped Femi previously to re-enter the Stronghold.
- Combat gear: Ranged/Magic equipment for safespotting the Black Demon, or a halberd for melee. Bring food and prayer potions if you’re lower level.
- Stamina potions: Useful for running between locations, especially on Karamja.
- Weight-reducing gear: To minimize run energy depletion.
Starting the Grand Tree Quest
The quest begins in the Tree Gnome Stronghold, a vibrant hub for gnomes northwest of Ardougne. Follow these initial steps to kick things off.
Speaking to King Narnode Shareen
Head to the Grand Tree in the center of the Tree Gnome Stronghold. Speak to King Narnode Shareen on the ground floor (dialogue options 1-2). He’ll explain that the Grand Tree is dying and ask for your help. Accept the quest to receive a Translation Book and a Bark Sample. Ensure you have two free inventory spaces before starting.
Visiting Hazelmere
Take the Bark Sample and Translation Book to Hazelmere, located on a small island east of Yanille. You can reach him via:
- Fairy Ring: Code CLS (requires partial completion of A Fairy Tale II).
- Minigame teleport: Nightmare Zone or Fishing Trawler.
- Ring of Dueling: Teleport to Castle Wars, then run east.
- Watchtower/Yanille teleport: Run southeast to the island.
- Charter ship: From Brimhaven to Port Khazard, then head south.
Talk to Hazelmere. He’ll examine the Bark Sample and give you a message scroll. Watch out for level 44 Jungle Spiders on the island—they’re not poisonous but can be annoying.
Investigating Glough’s Scheme
With Hazelmere’s message in hand, you’ll start unraveling a conspiracy involving the head tree guardian, Glough.
Returning to King Narnode
Go back to King Narnode in the Grand Tree. He’ll ask you to translate Hazelmere’s message. Select the following lines in order (you may need to choose “None of the above” until the correct options appear):
- “A man came to me with the King’s seal.”
- “I gave the man Daconia rocks.”
- “And Daconia rocks will kill the tree.”
The king will reveal that Daconia rocks are a fail-safe to destroy the tree and send you to speak with Glough, his head tree guardian.
Confronting Glough and Meeting Charlie
Find Glough in his treehouse southeast of the Grand Tree, just east of the ramp. Climb the ladder and talk to him (north of the Agility course). He’ll claim he’ll handle the situation. Return to King Narnode, who informs you that Glough has captured a human suspect.
Climb to the top floor of the Grand Tree and speak to the prisoner, Charlie. He’ll insist he was following Glough’s orders and suggest searching Glough’s house. Head back to Glough’s treehouse, search the cupboard north of the ladder, and find Glough’s Journal. Confront Glough with the evidence, but he’ll have you arrested.
Escaping to Karamja
You’ll wake up in a cell next to Charlie. Speak to him to learn about a shipyard on Karamja and get the password Ka-Lu-Min. King Narnode will appear, apologize, and urge you to escape via the Gnome Glider due to guards blocking other exits. Talk to Captain Errdo north of the cells (dialogue option 1) to fly to Karamja. The glider will crash west of the shipyard.
Uncovering Evidence at the Shipyard
The Karamja shipyard holds key evidence to expose Glough’s plans, but you’ll need to navigate carefully.
Accessing the Shipyard
From the crash site, run east past level 53 Jogres to the shipyard gate. Tell the worker “Glough sent me” and provide the password Ka-Lu-Min (dialogue options 2-1-2-2). Once inside, head to the southern dock and find the Foreman. You have two options:
- Kill him: The Foreman is level 23, so he’s easy to dispatch.
- Answer questions: If you prefer dialogue, answer his security questions (based on Glough’s Journal):
- “How is his wife?” – “Sadly, his wife is no longer with us.”
- “What’s his favorite dish?” – “Wormholes.”
- “What’s his new girlfriend’s name?” – “Anita.”
Either way, you’ll obtain a Lumber Order. Teleport back to the Tree Gnome Stronghold (Spirit Tree or Necklace of Passage). If you haven’t helped Femi before, she’ll charge 1,000 coins to sneak you in at the gate.
Delivering the Lumber Order
Present the Lumber Order to King Narnode, but he’ll dismiss it as insufficient proof. Speak to Charlie again on the top floor of the Grand Tree. He’ll suggest talking to Glough’s girlfriend, Anita, in a treehouse northwest of the swamp (west of the Grand Tree). Climb the stairs, talk to Anita (dialogue option 1), and she’ll give you a Key. Return to Glough’s house, use the Key on the chest, and retrieve the Invasion Plans (click “Continue” to ensure you receive them).
Confronting the Black Demon and Saving the Tree
With the Invasion Plans, you’re close to stopping Glough, but a final battle awaits.
Presenting the Invasion Plans
Take the Invasion Plans to King Narnode. He’ll give you four Twigs (ensure four free inventory slots). Head back to Glough’s house, go east to the watchtower tree, and climb up. Use the Twigs on the four pillars to spell TUZO from west to east. This unlocks a trapdoor to the south.
Fighting the Black Demon
Prepare for combat before going down the trapdoor. You’ll face a level 172 Black Demon. Here’s how to handle it:
Combat Style | Safespot | Recommended Gear |
---|---|---|
Ranged/Magic | North of the entrance ladder or behind rocks near Glough | Rune arrows, water runes, food, prayer potions |
Melee | Same safespots using a halberd | Dragon halberd, high melee stats, food |
After a cutscene with Glough, move to a safespot immediately to avoid damage. The demon despawns after 10 minutes if not killed, so act fast. Magic users should prioritize water spells, as the demon is weak to them.
Completing the Quest
Once the demon is defeated, head west, then north, to find King Narnode. Complete all dialogue with him. Search the nearby roots to find a Daconia Rock (click “Continue” to receive it). Give the rock to the king, and the quest will conclude.
