Embark on one of Old School RuneScape’s most iconic and challenging quests with our detailed Monkey Madness OSRS Quest Guide. This master-level quest, part of the Gnome quest series, takes you to the treacherous Ape Atoll to uncover the fate of the missing 10th Squad. Known for its complexity and high-stakes combat, Monkey Madness I rewards players with access to Ape Atoll, the ability to wield the Dragon Scimitar, and substantial experience points. This guide will walk you through every step, from preparation to defeating the Jungle Demon, ensuring you’re ready to tackle this adventure.
Monkey Madness I is a lengthy, master-difficulty quest that continues the story from The Grand Tree. You’ll help King Narnode Shareen locate his missing 10th Squad on Ape Atoll, a dangerous island filled with aggressive, high-level monkeys. The quest is divided into four chapters, culminating in a battle against a level 195 Jungle Demon. Before starting, ensure you meet the following requirements:
Quest and Skill Prerequisites
- Completed Quests: The Grand Tree and Tree Gnome Village.
- Recommended Skills: 43+ Prayer (for protection prayers), 40+ Combat stats (for survival).
- No mandatory skill requirements, but higher combat and agility help.
Required Items
Prepare these items to avoid interruptions during the quest:
- Gold Bar: Obtainable from Varrock West Bank (33 Magic for tele-grab) or quests like Waterfall Quest.
- Ball of Wool: Buy from Ardougne or craft with shears.
- Monkey Bones or Corpse: Kill a Karamjan monkey (regular monkey bones from Ape Atoll won’t work).
- Gnome Royal Seal: Provided by King Narnode during the quest.
- Recommended: 5-6 Antipoison potions, 4+ Energy potions, 4+ Prayer potions, high-healing food (sharks or better), teleport items (Ring of Dueling or Amulet of Glory), and good melee armor.
Why Prepare Thoroughly?
Ape Atoll is one of the most dangerous areas in OSRS. Without a monkey greegree, all creatures (except level 5 birds) are aggressive, and many are poisonous. Bring plenty of food, antipoison, and an emergency teleport. Turn off Auto Retaliate and use protection prayers to survive.
Step-by-Step Quest Walkthrough
Follow these steps to complete Monkey Madness I efficiently. We’ve broken down the quest into key stages to keep you on track.
Starting the Quest
- Speak to King Narnode Shareen in the Grand Tree (Tree Gnome Stronghold). He’ll task you with investigating the missing 10th Squad and give you the Gnome Royal Seal. Ensure you have one free inventory slot to avoid dropping the seal.
- Climb to the top of the Grand Tree and take the glider to Karamja (Gandius).
- Head north to the shipyard gate. Show the guard the Gnome Royal Seal to enter.
- Talk to G.L.O. Caranock in the southern building. He’ll claim the 10th Squad never arrived.
- Return to King Narnode, who will direct you to Daero at Blurberry’s Bar (second floor, east side of the Grand Tree).
Traveling to Ape Atoll
- Speak to Daero (chat options: 1-4-2-4-3-4-4-1) to be taken to the hangar. Talk to him again and solve the reinitialization puzzle. If you struggle, pay Glough 200,000 coins to nearly complete it for you.
- After solving the puzzle, speak to Waydar and then Lumdo to travel to Crash Island. Convince Lumdo (via Waydar) to sail to Ape Atoll.
- On Ape Atoll, follow the red path into the valley (see map on OSRS Wiki). You’ll be shot, arrested, and jailed.
Escaping and Gathering Items
- In jail, pick the lock when guards aren’t nearby (stay two squares away). Follow the green path to Garkor and complete his dialogue.
- Head to the U-shaped building in the southern village. Stay on the dark brown floor to avoid detection. Search the stacked crates for Monkey Dentures. Search the southeastern crate to fall into a cave (heal up to avoid fall damage). Search northwest crates for a M’amulet Mould.
- Teleport to Al Kharid, restock, and return via Daero, Waydar, and Lumdo.
- Enter the Ape Atoll Dungeon (west of Lumdo’s boat). Use Protect from Melee, run past traps and monsters, and bring food, antipoison, and energy potions. Give Zooknock the Gold Bar, Monkey Dentures, and M’amulet Mould to receive an Enchanted Bar and the mould back.
Crafting the M’speak Amulet
- Return to the village, enter the temple, and use Protect from Melee. Go downstairs via the trapdoor, use the Enchanted Bar on the wall of flames to craft the M’speak Amulet, and use the Ball of Wool on it to complete it.
- Go to the house west of the jail. Wait for the Monkey’s Aunt to leave, equip the M’speak Amulet, and talk to the Monkey Child. Give him 5 bananas (pick from the garden) to receive a Monkey Talisman.
Obtaining the Monkey Greegree
- Kill a Karamjan monkey for bones or a corpse if you haven’t already. Return to Zooknock in the dungeon with the Monkey Talisman and Karamjan monkey bones. He’ll create a Monkey Greegree, allowing you to transform into a monkey on Ape Atoll.
- Teleport to Ardougne Zoo, equip the Monkey Greegree, and talk to the Monkey Minder. Speak to a monkey to put it in your inventory, then unequip the greegree and talk to the Minder again. Walk (no teleporting) back to the Grand Tree and give the monkey to King Narnode.
Final Battle: The Jungle Demon
- Return to Ape Atoll, equip the Monkey Greegree and M’speak Amulet, and follow the red path to Garkor. Speak to the Elder Guard, climb the hill, cross the bridge, and talk to Kruk and Awowogei.
- Speak to Garkor again to receive the 10th Squad Sigil. Equip it to teleport to the Jungle Demon fight. Use Protect from Magic, stay out of melee range, and attack from a distance. The 10th Squad will assist you.
- After defeating the Jungle Demon, speak to Garkor, then teleport to the Grand Tree and talk to King Narnode to complete the quest.
Combat Tips for Ape Atoll and the Jungle Demon
Ape Atoll is perilous, and the Jungle Demon fight requires strategy. Here’s how to survive:
Navigating Ape Atoll Safely

- Stay in Grass: Hide from archer monkeys by sticking to grass or hugging coasts.
- Emergency Teleport: Carry a Ring of Dueling or Amulet of Glory to escape if overwhelmed.
- Antipoison: Spiders and snakes are poisonous; keep antipoison potions ready.
Defeating the Jungle Demon
