Family Crest OSRS Quick Guide

Family Crest OSRS Quick Guide

The Family Crest quest in Old School RuneScape (OSRS) is a rewarding adventure that sends players across Gielinor to retrieve three crest pieces for Dimintheis Fitzharmon. This quest unlocks powerful gauntlets with unique abilities, making it a must-do for players looking to boost their Cooking, Smithing, or Magic skills. This guide provides a concise, step-by-step walkthrough to complete the quest efficiently, optimized for both new and experienced players. Let’s dive into the essentials!

Before starting Family Crest, ensure you meet the skill requirements and gather recommended items to streamline the process. The quest is rated as Experienced difficulty, but with preparation, it’s manageable even for lower-level players.

Skill Requirements

  • 40 Mining: Needed to mine perfect gold ore.
  • 40 Smithing: Required to smelt perfect gold bars.
  • 40 Crafting: Necessary to craft perfect ruby jewelry.
  • 59 Magic: Needed to cast all four Blast spells (boostable with Wizard’s Mind Bomb or Magic Potion).

Recommended Items

Bringing the right items saves time and reduces risk, especially during the Wilderness section. Here’s a checklist:

  • Cooked Fish: Shrimp, Salmon, Tuna, Bass, Swordfish (all cooked).
  • Mining and Crafting: Any pickaxe, 2 cut Rubies, Necklace mould, Ring mould.
  • Combat and Magic: 2 Antipoison potions, Armor, Weapon, Runes for Wind Blast (13 Air, 4 Death), Water Blast (3 Water, 4 Death), Earth Blast (4 Earth, 4 Death), Fire Blast (5 Fire, 4 Death).
  • Teleports: Varrock, Camelot, Ardougne, Falador, Edgeville (Amulet of Glory), Al Kharid (Ring of Dueling).
  • Optional: Food, Energy potions, Combat gear for Chronozon (level 170 demon).

Tip: Ironman players without Warriors’ Guild access need 46 Fishing and 43 Cooking for Bass. Consider catching Gourmet Implings (28 Hunter) for cooked Tuna and Bass.

Starting the Quest

Begin by speaking to Dimintheis in southeastern Varrock, in the fenced-off area north of the Fancy Clothes Store. He explains that his family crest, essential for reclaiming his estate, was split into three pieces by his sons, who are now scattered across Gielinor. Your task is to retrieve these pieces from Caleb, Avan, and Johnathon.

Quest Start Dialogue

Choose chat options (3, 2, 1) when speaking to Dimintheis to accept the quest. He mentions Caleb, a chef in Catherby, as your first lead.

Collecting the First Crest Piece

The first crest piece is with Caleb in Catherby, and obtaining it is straightforward if you have the required fish.

Locating Caleb

Teleport to Camelot and head to Catherby. Find Caleb south of the Farming Shop, usually inside the building with a sink or wandering nearby. Speak to him (chat options 1, 2, 1) to learn that he and his brothers broke the crest into three parts.

Gathering Fish for Caleb

Caleb needs five cooked fish for a special salad: Shrimp, Salmon, Tuna, Bass, and Swordfish. Here’s where to get them:

Fish Location Fishing/Cooking Level
Shrimp Catherby (small net) 1 Fishing / 1 Cooking
Salmon Seers’ Village lake (fly fishing) 30 Fishing / 25 Cooking
Tuna Catherby (harpoon) 35 Fishing / 30 Cooking
Bass Catherby (big net) 46 Fishing / 43 Cooking
Swordfish Catherby (harpoon) 50 Fishing / 45 Cooking

Alternatively, buy these fish at the Grand Exchange. Give the fish to Caleb (chat option 1) to receive the first crest piece. Immediately speak to him again (chat option 1) to learn about Avan’s location in Al Kharid, or the Gem Trader’s dialogue won’t trigger correctly.

Obtaining the Second Crest Piece

The second crest piece requires crafting perfect ruby jewelry for Avan, involving mining, smelting, and a dungeon puzzle.

Finding Avan

Teleport to Al Kharid and speak to the Gem Trader (chat option 3). He directs you to Avan, a man in a yellow cape north of the Al Kharid mine (Scorpion Pit Chasm). Talk to Avan (chat option 2) to learn he needs a perfect ruby ring and necklace to win a lady’s affection.

Mining Perfect Gold Ore

Avan suggests speaking to Boot in the Dwarven Mines. Teleport to Falador, enter the Dwarven Mines (south of Falador East Bank), and find Boot in the far western corner (chat option 1). Boot reveals that perfect gold ore is in a dungeon near Witchaven.

Teleport to Ardougne and head east to the Witchaven Dungeon (marked by a dungeon icon). Enter the dungeon and navigate to a locked chamber with perfect gold rocks. Solve the lever puzzle to access it:

  1. Pull the northern lever (outside the north room) up.
  2. Enter the south room via the western door, pull the southern lever down.
  3. Exit via the eastern door, go to the northern lever, pull it down.
  4. Enter the north room, pull the lever up.
  5. Exit, pull the northern lever up.
  6. Enter the south room, pull the southern lever up.

The eastern hellhound room unlocks. Mine 2 perfect gold ores (beware of level 122 hellhounds; bring food and armor).

Crafting Perfect Jewelry

Teleport to Al Kharid, smelt the perfect gold ores into bars at the furnace, and craft a perfect ruby ring and necklace (select “Make 1” to avoid wasting bars). Return to Avan and give him the jewelry to receive the second crest piece. He’ll mention Johnathon at the Jolly Boar Inn.

Securing the Final Crest Piece

The final crest piece involves curing Johnathon and defeating Chronozon in the Wilderness, the quest’s most challenging part.

Curing Johnathon

Teleport to Varrock and head northeast to the Jolly Boar Inn near the lumberyard. Find Johnathon upstairs, poisoned and incoherent. Use an Antipoison potion on him (right-click, use) to learn that Chronozon, a level 170 demon, holds the third crest piece.

Defeating Chronozon

Prepare for combat in the Edgeville Dungeon, part of the Wilderness (beware of PKers). Teleport to Edgeville, bring runes for all four Blast spells, combat gear, food, and an Antipoison for poison spiders. Navigate the dungeon:

  • Enter the dungeon south of Edgeville Bank.
  • Go north, pass Chaos Druids, then west past Black Demons.
  • Find Chronozon south of the Black Demons near the Earth Obelisk.

Combat Strategy: Use a safespot behind rocks to avoid Chronozon’s melee attacks. Cast each Blast spell (Wind, Water, Earth, Fire) at least once, ensuring they deal damage (a 0 doesn’t count). Finish him with Magic or another combat style. Bring extra runes in case of misses. Kill a poison spider for safespot access if needed. Pick up the third crest piece after defeating Chronozon.

Wilderness Tip: The area is in the Wilderness, so travel light to minimize risk from PKers. Use low-value gear and bank valuable items.

Completing the Quest

Combine the three crest pieces by using them on each other to form the Family Crest. Teleport to Varrock, return to Dimintheis, and hand over the crest to complete the quest. Congratulations!

Rewards and Gauntlet Choices

Upon completion, you receive 1 Quest Point and a pair of Steel Gauntlets, which can be enchanted by one of the brothers for special abilities. Choose wisely, as changing the enchantment costs 25,000 coins (or 1,000,000 coins to own all three).

Gauntlet Options

Gauntlet Type Brother (Location) Effect
Cooking Gauntlets Caleb (Catherby) Reduces burn chance for lobsters, swordfish, monkfish, sharks, and anglerfish.
Goldsmith Gauntlets Avan (Al Kharid) Increases Smithing XP for gold bars from 22.5 to 56.2.
Chaos Gauntlets Johnathon (Jolly Boar Inn) Increases bolt spell damage by 3 (e.g., Fire Bolt).

Recommendation: Goldsmith Gauntlets are ideal for Smithing training, especially for Ironmen or players aiming for 99 Smithing. Cooking Gauntlets are great for high-level Cooking, while Chaos Gauntlets suit low-to-mid-level Magic training on a budget.

If you lose the gauntlets, Dimintheis will provide a replacement pair. Speak to him to start the enchantment process.

Final Note: The Family Crest quest is a fantastic blend of exploration, skilling, and combat, with rewards that remain useful throughout your OSRS journey. Follow this guide, prepare adequately, and you’ll breeze through it. Happy questing!
