Dragon Slayer Ironman OSRS Success Walkthrough

Killing a dragon in Old School RuneScape (OSRS) as an Ironman is a rite of passage. The Dragon Slayer quest is a big deal, especially for Ironmen, since you can’t just buy gear or supplies from the Grand Exchange. I’ve been playing OSRS for years, and let me tell you, completing this quest on my Ironman account felt like climbing a mountain. It’s tough, but the feeling of victory is unmatched. This guide is packed with tips, strategies, and personal insights to help you slay Elvarg and finish this iconic quest. Whether you’re a seasoned Ironman or just starting, let’s dive into how to conquer Dragon Slayer.
Dragon Slayer is one of the most important quests in OSRS. Why? Because it unlocks the ability to wear the rune platebody and green d’hide body, both solid armor pieces for mid-game Ironmen. Plus, it gives a massive 18,650 Strength and Defence XP, which is a game-changer for leveling up your combat stats early on. For Ironmen, the challenge is gathering all the required items yourself, which makes preparation a huge part of the journey.
I remember my first time tackling this quest on my Ironman. I was nervous, underprepared, and died twice to Elvarg before figuring out the right strategy. Trust me, with the right plan, you can avoid my mistakes and make this quest a breeze.
Quest Requirements
Before you even think about fighting Elvarg, you need to meet the requirements. Here’s what you need:
-
Quest Points: 32 (to start the quest).
-
Skills: No hard skill requirements, but I recommend at least 40 Attack, 40 Strength, 40 Defence, and 37 Magic for Ironmen to make the fight easier.
-
Items: You’ll need a bunch of stuff, which I’ll cover later.
-
Access: Be ready to travel across Gielinor, from Varrock to Crandor.
Have you got 32 Quest Points yet? If not, grind out some easier quests like The Knight’s Sword or Witch’s Potion to hit that mark.
Step-by-Step Quest Walkthrough
Let’s break down the Dragon Slayer quest into manageable steps. I’ll walk you through each part, share my experiences, and give tips to make it easier for Ironmen.
Starting the Quest
Head to the Champions’ Guild south of Varrock and talk to the Guildmaster. He’ll tell you about Elvarg, the dragon terrorizing Crandor. To prove you’re worthy, you need to collect three map pieces. This part can feel like a scavenger hunt, but it’s doable with some patience.
When I started, I underestimated how much running around I’d need to do. Stock up on energy potions if you can, or just walk and enjoy the scenery!
Gathering the Map Pieces
You need three map pieces to locate Crandor. Here’s how to get each one:
Map Piece 1: Melzar’s Maze
-
Location: Melzar’s Maze, south of Falador.
-
What You Need: Maze key (get it from the Guildmaster).
-
Strategy: Fight through waves of enemies like rats, ghosts, and skeletons to reach Melzar the Mad and the Lesser Demon. The final chest gives you the map piece.
-
Ironman Tip: Bring food like lobsters or swordfish. I used trout I fished myself, and it worked fine, but higher-healing food makes it safer.
Melzar’s Maze gave me my first real taste of Ironman combat challenges. Killing that Lesser Demon with my measly rune scimitar was intense! Make sure your combat stats are at least in the 30s to avoid getting wrecked.
Map Piece 2: Thalzar’s Map Piece
-
Location: Port Sarim jail.
-
What You Need: 10,000 coins or a Wizard‘s Mind Bomb, Silk, Lobster Pot, and Unfired Bowl.
-
Strategy: Talk to Wormbrain in the jail. You can either pay 10,000 coins for the map piece or kill him with Magic and use Telekinetic Grab (Level 33 Magic) to pick it up.
-
Ironman Tip: Gathering 10,000 coins as an Ironman is a pain. I grinded goblins and sold their drops to shops, but using Telekinetic Grab is way faster if you have the Magic level.
Ever tried Telekinetic Grab on an Ironman? It’s a lifesaver for grabbing items without spending hours grinding gold.
Map Piece 3: Lozar’s Map Piece
-
Location: Ice Mountain, near the Black Knights’ Fortress.
-
What You Need: Level 33 Magic for Telekinetic Grab or a friend to trade with (not an option for Ironmen).
-
Strategy: Kill the goblin General Bentnoze or General Wartface in Goblin Village for a Goblin Kitchen Key. Use it to access Lozar’s House in Draynor Village, where you’ll find the map piece in a chest.
-
Ironman Tip: Kill goblins until you get the key. It took me about 20 minutes of goblin-slaying to get it.
This part was tedious for me because RNG wasn’t kind. Keep at it, and you’ll get that key eventually.
Preparing for Crandor
Once you have all three map pieces, combine them to form the Crandor Map. Now you need to prepare for the journey to Crandor and the fight with Elvarg. Here’s what you need:
Item |
How to Get It (Ironman) |
---|---|
90 Steel Nails |
Smith steel bars into nails (Level 34 Smithing). I smelted my own bars from Falador mines. |
3 Planks |
Pick up planks from the Barbarian Village or kill zombies in Melzar’s Maze. |
Hammer |
Buy from a general store or find one in a crate in Lumbridge. |
2000 Coins |
Grind low-level monsters like cows or goblins and sell hides or bones to shops. |
Get from the Duke of Lumbridge. Essential for surviving Elvarg’s fire breath! |
|
Lobsters or Better |
Fish and cook your own food. I fished lobsters at Musa Point for this. |
Unfired Bowl |
Craft with clay (Level 8 Crafting). Dig clay in the Crafting Guild and use a pottery wheel. |
Wizard‘s Mind Bomb |
Buy from the Falador tavern or brew yourself (Level 34 Cooking). |
Silk |
Buy from the Silk Trader in Al Kharid or steal from stalls (Level 20 Thieving). |
Lobster Pot |
Buy from a fishing shop like the one in Port Sarim. |
This prep phase is where being an Ironman really tests your patience. Gathering those nails was a slog for me, but it felt so rewarding when I finally had everything ready.
Getting to Crandor
Take your map, planks, nails, and hammer to Ned in Draynor Village. He’ll fix up a boat for you. Then, head to Klarense in Port Sarim to buy the Lady Lumbridge for 2,000 coins. Sail to Crandor, but brace yourself the boat crashes, and you can’t sail back!
I messed this part up once by forgetting the nails. Double-check your inventory before heading to Ned!
Fighting Elvarg
Now comes the big moment: fighting Elvarg, the green dragon. She’s level 83 and hits hard with her dragonfire, so you need to be ready.
Recommended Gear and Stats
-
Melee Setup:
-
Weapon: Rune scimitar or rune sword (best you can get as an Ironman).
-
Armor: Rune chainbody, rune med helm, and anti-dragon shield. Green d’hide chaps if you have them.
-
Amulet: Amulet of strength or power.
-
-
Stats: At least 40 Attack, Strength, and Defence. 43 Prayer for Protect from Melee is a huge help.
-
Inventory:
-
15-20 lobsters or better.
-
Strength potion (optional, brew at Level 38 Herblore).
-
Teleport runes (if you die, you can get back faster).
-
Anti-dragon shield (don’t forget this!).
-
Combat Strategy
Elvarg‘s dragonfire can hit up to 50 without the shield, so always equip the anti-dragon shield. Her melee attacks are also brutal, hitting up to 10. Here’s how to fight her:
-
Enter the Volcano: Climb down the volcano on Crandor to reach Elvarg’s lair.
-
Pray Protect from Melee: If you have 43 Prayer, this reduces her melee damage significantly.
-
Attack and Eat: Stay close, hit her with your best weapon, and eat when your health drops below 20.
-
Watch for Dragonfire: If your shield isn’t equipped, swap to it immediately.
-
Run if Needed: If you’re low on food, run to the back of the room to eat safely.
My first attempt at Elvarg was a disaster. I forgot to equip the shield and got roasted in seconds. On my second try, I used Protect from Melee and brought 20 lobsters, and it made all the difference. What’s your combat level? If you’re below 60, stock up on extra food.
Tips for Ironman Success
Here are some extra tips from my experience to make Dragon Slayer easier:
-
Train Combat Early: Grind cows or goblins to hit at least 40 in Attack, Strength, and Defence.
-
Stockpile Food: Fish and cook lobsters or swordfish. I spent a whole evening fishing at Musa Point, and it paid off.
-
Use Safe Spots: In Melzar’s Maze, you can safe-spot some enemies like the Lesser Demon with ranged or magic.
-
Save Coins: Sell junk like bones or hides to general stores to afford the 2,000 coins for the boat.
-
Practice Prayer: If you can get 43 Prayer, it makes the Elvarg fight so much easier.
Ever tried fishing for hours as an Ironman? It’s tedious, but those lobsters are worth it.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
I made plenty of mistakes during my Dragon Slayer run, and I don’t want you to repeat them. Here are some pitfalls to watch out for:
-
Forgetting the Anti-Dragon Shield: This is a death sentence against Elvarg.
-
Not Bringing Enough Food: 10 lobsters might seem enough, but bring at least 15.
-
Low Combat Stats: If you’re below level 50 combat, you’ll struggle.
-
Skipping Prayer: Protect from Melee is a lifesaver if you have it.
What’s the worst mistake you’ve made in OSRS? For me, it was sailing to Crandor without nails and having to run back to Falador.
Rewards and What’s Next
After slaying Elvarg, you’ll get:
-
18,650 Strength XP
-
18,650 Defence XP
-
Access to wear rune platebody and green d’hide body
-
The satisfaction of completing one of OSRS‘s toughest free-to-play quests
With these rewards, you can start tackling harder content like Barrows or Fire Cape prep. The XP boost will also push your combat level, making training easier. I used the rune platebody for ages after this quest it’s a solid piece for Ironmen.
Final Thoughts
Dragon Slayer is a grind, but it’s one of the most rewarding quests for Ironmen. Gathering all the items yourself, fighting through Melzar’s Maze, and finally slaying Elvarg feels like a true adventure. I still remember the adrenaline of that final fight and the pride of finishing it on my Ironman. Take your time, prepare well, and you’ll be wearing that rune platebody in no time.
