The Cat is a non-player character (NPC) found in Old School RuneScape (OSRS), specifically located in the Kandarin region. Cats play a key role in various quests, and NPC interactions, and serve as companions to players who own them.

Location

Cats can primarily be found in Varrock, where they freely roam the streets and nearby areas. The most notable location for seeing cats is southwest of the Varrock west bank.

Features and Functions

Cats serve several purposes in OSRS, including:

• Companionship: Players can adopt a cat after completing the Cooks’ Assistant quest. Aside from being a pet, cats also provide players with a sense of companionship as they walk beside them.
• Mousehunting: Once a player adopts a cat, it can assist them in hunting mice. This involves the cat chasing and capturing mice that appear while the player is engaged in various activities.
• Quest Involvement: Cats are integral to certain quests, including “Icthlarin’s Little Helper” and “Cat‘s Diary.” These quests often require the player to interact with cats or utilize their abilities.
• Training: Players can train their cats to grow into larger versions, such as the Hunting Cat or the Spirit Cat, depending on the conditions met during their gameplay.

Types of Cats

There are several varieties of cats that players can adopt:

• Small Cat: The initial form of the cat that players can adopt, which has limited capabilities.
• Medium Cat: Evolved from the small cat after a period of companionship; also performs mouse hunting.
• Large Cat: The advanced evolution; capable of participating in specific quests and containing unique properties.
• Scottish Fold: A rare breed that is often sought after by players due to its unique appearance and in-game benefits.

How to Obtain a Cat

To acquire a cat, players must complete the following steps:

1. Complete the Cooks’ Assistant quest to become eligible for adoption.
2. Visit the house of Fezzer in Varrock, where the adoption of a small cat occurs.
3. Choose a cat from the available options and follow on-screen prompts to finalize the adoption.

Caring for Your Cat

To keep a cat happy and healthy, players must:

• Feed the cat regularly; it typically enjoys fish or other pet food items.
• Interact and play with the cat to enhance its companionship status.
• Ensure the cat is indoors or in designated areas where it can hunt mice and stay safe.

Notes

Players should be aware that once a cat catches a mouse, a cooldown period is implemented before it can hunt again. It is encouraged to maintain the cat‘s happiness for maximum effectiveness in-game.
